In Part One of this series on Digital Transformation, we discussed what it is? We compared Digital Transformation to the idea of Digital encroachment or the creeping of digital devices into our lives.
In Part Two, we are going to discuss how all of this Digital Transformation actually works.
The how of the digital encroachment into our everyday lives is really broken down into three components; Hardware, software, and connectivity.
We’ll start with the hardware. PC’s have been around since the late 80’s but there we so big for so long, too big and bulky to find its way into many places. But as miniaturization really sped up in the new millennium, computers got small enough to fit into so many places. Smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, intelligent lighting, there is a computer in everything now because it is small enough to put anywhere even in wearables.
Once the computer was small enough to fit everywhere, we needed smart software to enable the systems to function intuitively. The entry of AI, Artificial Intelligence into computing was way back in the 50’s but it was really the idea of Machine Learning that started the digital encroachment. The ability to take large amounts of data and build logic to analyze and act intuitively upon that data is what makes all of these digital devices so amazing.
AI, Machine Learning, Internet of Things, and Blockchain technology are at the root of making digital transformation work.
The third part of our story today is all about connections. All of these smart devices with their incredible capabilities need to be able to store data and share processing with other devices and with services on the internet. High speed wireless, cellular, Bluetooth, and even technologies like Zigbee make communication seamless.
The confluence of all of these technological innovations has led us to Digital Transformation. the question now is where will Digital Transformation lead us?
